The Pythagorean Theorem
Before we get started, take a second and think back to when we classified triangles. We had equilateral, scalene, obtuse, isosceles, and right triangles. In your Geometry notebook jot down a definition for right triangle and draw a picture. Do you remember the other triangles?
Goals for Lesson 1:
- Students will be able to describe the Pythagorean Theorem.
- Students will reflect on a real life example of the Pythagorean Theorem.
- Students will solve basic problems using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the hypotenuse of a right triangle.
So... What is the Pythagorean Theorem?
While you watch the video, please take notes in your notebook. Pay close attention to the parts of the Pythagorean Theorem, what it is, when it is used, and the examples given.

Continuing with the sports theme, let's take another look at an example of the Pythagorean Theorem.

These two sports examples are wonderful real world connections to right triangles that some of you may have personal experiences with. The poem is a little less obvious, but the diagram to the right should help detail what the write intended.
Reflect:
Think about right triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem. Come up with an original example of the Pythagorean Theorem in your life. Write 3-4 sentences and draw a picture with labels to support your example.
